[00:01:41] Let's have a touch from McKennie.
[00:01:42] This is Cambianzo.
[00:01:43] Here's Vlachovic.
[00:01:44] Away from Hien, Dusan Vlachovic!
[00:01:48] Scores again in the Coppa Italia final.
[00:01:53] And we've played just four minutes in Rome.
[00:01:57] And it's Juventus who make their mark first with one of their biggest players of the lot.
[00:02:03] Dusan Vlachovic!
[00:02:06] Well, there you have it.
[00:02:07] The Coppa Italia-Freccerosa 2023-24 season has come to a close
[00:02:12] with Juventus winning the competition for a record-extending 15th time.
[00:02:19] They're already the only team into double figures.
[00:02:21] Roma and Inter on nine.
[00:02:24] And now Max Olegri has won it for the fifth time.
[00:02:27] He's the most successful coach in the competition's history.
[00:02:31] And to be honest, Juventus were the winners, not just on the basis of what we've seen tonight.
[00:02:36] They were very convincing in the tournament throughout.
[00:02:38] They won 6-1 in the round of 16.
[00:02:41] They won 4-0 in the quarterfinals against Salernitana and Frosinone, respectively.
[00:02:46] They pretty much had their semi-final put to bed after the first leg
[00:02:50] when they won 2-0 against Lazio, despite...
[00:02:52] A minor slip where they allowed Lazio to, at one stage, level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate.
[00:03:00] But then Milleck scored later on.
[00:03:01] He goes away as the competition's leading goalscorer with four goals, believe it or not.
[00:03:06] But tonight was all about Dusan Vlachovic.
[00:03:08] It was basically a tale of two strikers.
[00:03:11] We saw how important Juventus' number nine was to them.
[00:03:14] And whilst Gianluca Skamaka doesn't wear nine for Atalanta,
[00:03:18] his absence was keenly felt by Ladea.
[00:03:21] Because he was suspended.
[00:03:24] And whereas Juventus had Locatelli missing and made light of his absence,
[00:03:28] I thought Hans-Nikolusi Kaviglia was very impressive despite having limited game time.
[00:03:32] Came into the holding midfield role, played very well.
[00:03:36] But as I mentioned on the pod on Tuesday,
[00:03:39] a colleague of mine had said that he felt it was either a big Atalanta win
[00:03:42] or a Juventus 1-0 win.
[00:03:44] And as soon as Vlachovic scored inside four minutes,
[00:03:46] it really felt like the latter, especially as Juventus just sat deep,
[00:03:50] asked Atalanta to break them down.
[00:03:52] And Atalanta, like so many teams tried in the first half of the season
[00:03:56] when Juventus were winning a number of games by a goal to nil,
[00:03:59] just had no answer to break down Juventus.
[00:04:02] We saw it earlier this season with Juventus winning in Florence
[00:04:05] when Miretti scored the only goal.
[00:04:07] And it was just they couldn't get in behind the Juventus' defence.
[00:04:11] There were crosses galore which were just repelled easily by Bremer,
[00:04:15] Danilo and Gatti, all of whom were excellent, diligent as ever.
[00:04:18] And they seemed to absolutely relish that particular task
[00:04:23] of just keeping clean sheets and defending and staying switched on.
[00:04:27] Bremer, fantastic as usual.
[00:04:29] Danilo, as ever, very experienced, did his job.
[00:04:32] And Juventus were just superior to a man all over the pitch.
[00:04:36] It's the third Coppa Italia final that Atalanta have played under Gianpiero Gasparini.
[00:04:40] And in all three, they've been pretty underwhelming.
[00:04:42] In 2021 against Juventus in Reggio Emilia,
[00:04:45] in front of only 4,000 fans, lest we forget, because it was post-pandemic.
[00:04:50] At least then they scored.
[00:04:51] They actually equalised after Kulasevski had scored the opener.
[00:04:55] It was Malinovski who equalised on that occasion.
[00:04:57] But this time around, it was hugely disappointing
[00:05:01] because they just never really looked like scoring one shot
[00:05:04] from Adam Ola-Lukman in the second half, notwithstanding,
[00:05:07] when he opened up to try and curl it across goal and then quickly
[00:05:10] closed his foot nicely and actually caught Perin out of his near post.
[00:05:15] Perin was beaten but the ball flashed off the post.
[00:05:17] But Juventus could have easily scored a second.
[00:05:19] There was Vlachovic with a decent chance, a decent cry for a penalty,
[00:05:24] I think, when it looked like shoulder to shoulder initially.
[00:05:26] A slow motion close-up replay showed that actually he had went knee to knee
[00:05:30] on Vlachovic so that could have easily been a penalty.
[00:05:34] Vlachovic then had the ball in the net with the most beautiful
[00:05:38] glancing header from Kambias or he who set up the opening goal as well
[00:05:41] with that lovely through ball.
[00:05:42] And then semi-automatic offside technologies showed that actually
[00:05:47] Vlachovic was marginally offside, albeit again it feels a little bit unfair.
[00:05:51] It was his shoulder and his kneecap, both of which are parts of the anatomy
[00:05:55] with which you can score, albeit Vlachovic actually scored with his head.
[00:06:00] And it was a lovely header.
[00:06:01] It's exactly what you need.
[00:06:02] Barely needed to make any contact with it.
[00:06:03] Got just enough on it to send it in off the post.
[00:06:06] No chance for Karniiseki, but Atalanta didn't show up.
[00:06:10] They were just hugely disappointing.
[00:06:12] And it really flies in the face of what Caspirini's constantly been saying.
[00:06:16] He's really been beating the jammers to the fact that he feels and has always
[00:06:20] felt that Coppa Italia was Atalanta's only real possibility of winning a trophy
[00:06:24] of relatively short route to the final domestic competition where
[00:06:27] he feels they can get the better of their rivals.

[00:08:03] I did think it was bizarre that so many people were talking up Atalanta's so-called
[00:08:07] favorites in this because Juventus had a really underwhelming 2024.
[00:08:10] They've been shocking in the second half of the league season.
[00:08:13] But they've been pretty good in the cup and Allegri knows how to win it.
[00:08:16] He won four league and cup doubles in his first five years in charge of Juventus
[00:08:21] where he won the league title in the first year and then years two through to five.
[00:08:26] He won not only the squadetta but the Coppa Italia as well.
[00:08:30] And he's also delivered Juventus' first trophy in three years since they won against the same
[00:08:34] opposition, the same competition, albeit under Andrea Piedlo at a different venue.
[00:08:39] Back in 2021 at the Mappé and I have to say I was hugely pleased for Vlachovic who's
[00:08:45] been recruited at huge expense by Juventus.
[00:08:47] Had his detractors like Allegri's had his detractors.
[00:08:50] We had a comical moment when he again threw off his jacket and tie in a rage.
[00:08:55] I don't know who he was exactly annoyed with.
[00:08:57] Max Allegri has now been sent off and if Allegri keeps going
[00:09:01] he won't end up with any items of clothing left.
[00:09:03] I think he was initially annoyed with the referee for not blowing a foul on
[00:09:08] Danilo after Edison's shot had been saved by Karnisekhi.
[00:09:13] He did eventually blow the referee.
[00:09:15] There was also that incident prior to that when Illing Junior had been struck in the face
[00:09:19] by a Zappa Costa cross and then Jim Sidi put it into Coatman as header and he put it narrowly
[00:09:26] wide and would have been very interesting to see what would have happened there.
[00:09:29] I think the goal would have stood because the referee didn't stop play so I think
[00:09:32] it was all building up to that and Allegri knew what the fine margins were and it's
[00:09:36] a big victory for him winning it his way, one nil defensive solidity.
[00:09:41] You only need a goal to win that's especially true in a final
[00:09:44] and it's just another trophy added to his CV and it's very hard to argue with him.
[00:09:49] So clearly he was upset with the referee.
[00:09:53] He then clearly made his feelings plain.
[00:09:56] The fourth official spotted that and then the fourth official relayed that message to the
[00:10:00] referee who then promptly dismissed him and I think he was then even more vexed by the
[00:10:07] fact that the fourth official had had the temerity to actually say to his colleague,
[00:10:12] the on-field referee Fabio Maresca that actually Allegri had been talking out of turn.
[00:10:19] And apparently he was even saying where's Rocky referring to Gianluca Rocky who's the
[00:10:23] referee's chief as if to say you know what are these appointments all about really.
[00:10:27] So all things considered well played Juventus, very well played they never looked like
[00:10:33] conceding. They gave Bayer Leverkusen a pretty good insight into the best possible
[00:10:39] way to approach playing against Atalanta next Wednesday in Dublin in the Europa League
[00:10:44] final because Atalanta just had no answers and they were made to look very ordinary
[00:10:48] and very one-dimensional in the absence of Gianluca Schemaka.
[00:10:54] So I think it's a bit of a damp squib all things considered.
[00:10:56] Juventus fans won't care, Allegri's acolytes will be pleased as well.
[00:11:01] It's certainly vindication for him he's got a lot of flak over the last few months
[00:11:07] about the way Juventus has been playing you know certain quarters he's been called
[00:11:10] outdated a dinosaur, tactically inept but on the big stage when there's a trophy on the line
[00:11:16] he turned up and they won and you have to wonder where Atalanta go from this now under
[00:11:22] Gasperini it's the third final that they've lost under him 2019, 2021 and 2024.
[00:11:27] Might become four finals they've been beaten in if Leverkusen who will star
[00:11:31] like Emma's favorites are able to win the Europa League and I'm really curious to see
[00:11:35] whether Schemaka in particular having left his side short-handed with that very naive
[00:11:40] yellow card against Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg in Bergamo whether
[00:11:46] if he's back leading the line as we fully expect him to in the Europa League final
[00:11:49] whether he's going to have that real desire to show what he's all about make up for lost time
[00:11:55] and actually haul Atalanta over the line it would be an incredible season it's still
[00:11:59] going to be a memorable season but they won't want it to be a campaign like Fiorentina had
[00:12:02] last season when they were beaten in the Coppa Italia final by Inter and when they
[00:12:06] lost the conference league final to West Ham but there is a real danger of that coming to pass
[00:12:11] for Atalanta. Gasperini was grinning after the match not exactly sure why he's continued to say
[00:12:17] that his legacy won't be defined by whether or not Atalanta win a trophy but it is and
[00:12:22] it remains the only thing missing from his time in charge eight wonderful seasons several
[00:12:26] European qualifications that's almost become the rule as opposed to the exception they've
[00:12:30] qualified for the Champions League many times I fully expect them to qualify for the Champions
[00:12:34] League again this season be it in fifth place or be it via winning the Europa League but this
[00:12:40] night was all about Juventus even when it's not a vintage group of players even when Allegri
[00:12:46] clearly had his better days his better days are perhaps behind him in terms of
[00:12:52] his coaching career they still are able to win keep a clean sheet 15th Coppa Italia first
[00:12:58] piece of silverware in three years and three years was a long time for them to go without
[00:13:02] winning a trophy and Dusan Vlachovic he'll grab the headlines he'll be the poster boy tomorrow
[00:13:08] the cover story in all of the Italian sports press and he richly deserves it so that's Patrick
[00:13:13] Hendricks signing off with this slight summary of the Coppa Italia and Juventus season
[00:13:18] and if Allegri is to move on from the Juventus helm then he does so in style with yet another
[00:13:24] piece of silverware Juventus do what Juventus do so well they've won again
[00:13:31] the Bianconeri beat Atalanta by a goal to deal it is a Juventus triumph it is the Coppa Italia
