[00:01:44] I'm Nina Razzuki and I've just watched two of the most important matches being played tonight on Thursday night.

[00:01:52] As we all know, we don't have an Italian team in the Champions League,

[00:01:56] but we do have three tremendous teams in the Europa League.

[00:02:01] And, ah, what a game.

[00:02:05] And yes, I am referring to Atalanta's 3-0 victory over Liverpool.

[00:02:11] Now, I've started to get a little bit offended.

[00:02:14] Hear me out. Atalanta are not the best team, but the way that it was being described, it's only fair.

[00:02:19] Liverpool were going to be hands-on bookies favourites for this.

[00:02:25] They are absolutely the best team in the competition.

[00:02:28] It's just that when they continue to be described as overwhelming favourites,

[00:02:31] I was like, alright, they're not playing a team no one's ever heard of. It's still Atalanta.

[00:02:36] But who am I kidding? I mean, I have a piece out in my column in the BBC that was published today.

[00:02:44] And even I say, don't think it's going to happen.

[00:02:49] Liverpool have been in extraordinary form.

[00:02:52] They do look like now at the business end when it's really important,

[00:02:56] when they need the win, something has somewhat tailed off.

[00:03:00] But the same could be said about Atalanta, who he had actually spoken about in the main show.

[00:03:06] Patrick had talked about the fact that they haven't had many defenders available.

[00:03:12] Again tonight they lost Sead Kolacinac.

[00:03:16] And they don't actually have the squad depth to be able to rotate and challenge on all three fronts.

[00:03:23] And that is very much, I think, the opinion of many people across Italy,

[00:03:29] pundits and broadcasters and opposing coaches.

[00:03:34] Also watching them play against Cagliari in that 2-1 loss,

[00:03:38] there was a somewhat of complacency which can happen when you're playing teams that are so far down the table.

[00:03:46] But in that matchup against Fiorentina it looked like they were more ferocious

[00:03:51] than they were precise and intelligent and capable of really creating that numerical superiority

[00:03:59] that allows them to get into those great positions to score.

[00:04:02] So coming off the back of two losses in a row, people weren't high on Atalanta winning this.

[00:04:09] But this was a magnificent performance at Anfield.

[00:04:12] And I think that's the thing that we need to underline. It's at Anfield.

[00:04:16] Of course this is the second time that Atalanta has now gone to Anfield and collected the win.

[00:04:21] But the first time, as everyone told you probably 345 times, it was during the pandemic.

[00:04:28] So there wasn't the atmosphere of having a stadium where all the fans are behind

[00:04:34] and singing the songs and Liverpool stadium is about the atmosphere. It's not about the ground.

[00:04:41] And so this was the first time that Atalanta was going to face that

[00:04:45] and it was going to be interesting to see how they would react to that.

[00:04:49] Much has been said about Gasperini. He is very much and remains a genius of football.

[00:04:55] And I was asked several times by the English media about comparisons to Deserbim.

[00:05:02] I said Deserbim himself said that he's inspired by Gasperini.

[00:05:05] I mean Gasperini is the OG when it comes to the type of man marking, the use of the goalkeepers.

[00:05:12] He's so brilliant at really developing talent and continuing to push Atalanta

[00:05:20] to heights that no one ever imagined.

[00:05:23] And this was a performance that I don't think anyone saw coming.

[00:05:27] Not from Atalanta and certainly not from Gianluca Scamacca.

[00:05:31] This was a player that I think England haven't really seen the best of obviously at West Ham.

[00:05:38] He chose to go back to Atalanta because he knew that Gasperini would be able to guide him forward

[00:05:44] to teach him what he needed to learn and his performances have started to improve a lot.

[00:05:49] He started to score with a lot more consistency but I think tonight's performance was so special.

[00:05:57] The finish was extraordinary.

[00:05:59] The defending from Liverpool was absolutely hideous.

[00:06:03] Canate losing him for the second goal was something I wouldn't expect of a back line being led by Virgil van Dijk.

[00:06:12] But this was all about Atalanta.

[00:06:14] I don't want to talk about the fact that Liverpool had no idea how to come up against the man marking that Atalanta are so capable of.

[00:06:22] This seems somewhat strange to me considering Liverpool have played them before considering Atalanta are very predictable.

[00:06:29] Not predictable but you know what to expect.

[00:06:32] It's not like a team that tries to change their tactics to suit the opponents.

[00:06:37] Atalanta are who they are and they are like that all the time.

[00:06:40] So it seems like they were clearly underestimated for this match because Liverpool had no idea how to play against them.

[00:06:48] No idea how to stop the wave after wave, the ferociousness, the desire.

[00:06:54] There were just too many wide open gaps.

[00:06:57] It was remarkable to watch.

[00:06:59] It is almost like they walked into that match having never seen how Atalanta played before.

[00:07:03] And that is what I don't understand.

[00:07:06] But leaving Liverpool aside it was about Gasperini, about the superiority, about the attitude of his players.

[00:07:15] He said after the Cagliari match that we need to show that spirit, the spirit that we saw from Cagliari.

[00:07:22] We need to replicate that and show that against Liverpool and he very much got that.

[00:07:27] Perfect wing play from Zephyrkoste to Lid and Cross to Skalakka for that first goal.

[00:07:35] Brilliant wing play, brilliant movements all around from the players.

[00:07:40] Passilich was excellent.

[00:07:42] I can't believe it was only 3-0 because Coupe miners missed two glorious opportunities for goal.

[00:07:50] And honestly in my head, I mean Passilich, if you include that goal as well,

[00:07:54] that open goal that he missed in the very beginning of the match,

[00:07:57] we're looking at potentially 5-6-0 against Liverpool.

[00:08:01] I mean they were glorious opportunities that were squandered and actually looking at it,

[00:08:06] I just saw Coupe miners missing it and I was thinking, wait hold on, it's so Seria, right?

[00:08:12] Two glorious chances missed.

[00:08:15] It's just something that you see so much these days from Seria players.

[00:08:19] But of course they managed to convert three of the most perfect goals.

[00:08:23] Their XG was actually 2.58, Liverpool's was 1.78.

[00:08:27] So they created chances, Mohamed Salah got an offside goal.

[00:08:32] It was actually a beautiful goal but it was offside.

[00:08:35] It just showed you the sort of tiny errors that they were making, they were rushed,

[00:08:39] they were overwhelmed, they were confused.

[00:08:42] Because it also looked like this energy that Atilla Hand had wouldn't subside.

[00:08:47] They kept going wanting to score more goals, wanting to push forward all the time

[00:08:51] and it was like a leak that they didn't know how to stop.

[00:08:55] So it was truly fantastic.

[00:08:59] Coupe had his hands, his head in his hands because he was like, this is the worst performance.

[00:09:05] The last time they've lost at home in the Europa League was in 2012

[00:09:09] and it was also against an Italian team.

[00:09:11] It was Udinese.

[00:09:13] This is a team that hasn't lost a home game since last January, so 2023.

[00:09:20] So we're talking about 16 months ago now.

[00:09:23] It's truly fantastic from Atalanta who nobody saw this coming,

[00:09:28] two defeats in a row to come up, to show up to Anfield,

[00:09:32] to put in this performance that showed such courage and bravery.

[00:09:36] And this is the thing, the winner of this game was always going to be the team

[00:09:39] that pushed forward and took their chances and played with courage.

[00:09:44] And I genuinely thought it would be Liverpool because that is how we always see them play.

[00:09:49] And considering their form, I wasn't sure about Atalanta, I thought perhaps,

[00:09:54] now that they were potentially losing out on all their targets

[00:09:59] that we wouldn't see this performance.

[00:10:01] But it was they that demonstrated the courage and the bravery to keep pushing forward

[00:10:05] and they collected their just rewards.

[00:10:08] Over to the other match.

[00:10:11] It was held at San Siro as Milan welcomed Roma,

[00:10:16] who obviously had just won over Lazio in a hugely important dad-wider le capitale.
