Forza Evan Ndicka! Some Things are Bigger Than Calcio

It was a week of draws in Serie A but the football was secondary as the main focus of the week was the wellbeing of Roma’s Evan Ndicka, who collapsed on the pitch at Udinese with chest pain. Fortunately he is on the road to recovery.

Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari keep on Cagliari-ing with yet another late comeback, this time at San Siro to earn a 2-2 draw against champions-elect Inter.

Sassuolo continues to be a bogey team for Milan after a 3-3 draw in which it was the rossoneri which needed to come back from a 2-goal deficit.

Atalanta let up a 2-goal lead against Verona ahead of the Europa League return.

Can the deficits in the Europa League quarter finals be turned around: for Milan against Roma and for Liverpool against Atalanta?

Will Atalanta's genius Gian Piero Gasperini become their Alex Ferguson, or will bigger pastures come calling?

And we have to talk about Juventus after a dull scoreless draw with cross-town rivals Torino in the Turin derby.

[00:02:10] What a weekend in Sedia Gang. It was draws and draws and draws. I should have counted them

[00:02:16] before I started doing this intro, but I don't know. I know Patrick Kendrick who is with

[00:02:20] me for this podcast knows because he did a tweet about it. And was it eight draws in a row,

[00:02:25] seven and a half technically because we have the Audinese Roma game which was abandoned level.

[00:02:32] There were seven games which were completed, which would draw the first two of the round,

[00:02:35] funnily enough produced a result. That's your four Saloni Tana one and then let you one

[00:02:39] Empoli nil. But since then we haven't had a result. So the run is ongoing. In fact,

[00:02:44] your tweet was asking if it was a record and I don't know if you ever got to the

[00:02:48] bottom of whether or not that's a record for a sequence of consecutive draws.

[00:02:52] Funnily enough, I then went to watch the Chroneche di Spogliatoio content live which I've never seen

[00:02:58] before. I've seen the content before but I've never seen it streamed live before called Fontana

[00:03:02] di Trevi with Ricardo Trevisani and they have the encyclopaedic knowledge of Giuseppe

[00:03:07] Pastore who suggested there was an equivalent round of seven draws from an eight game round

[00:03:15] of fixtures. So proportionally that was higher albeit if we were to reach eight and that

[00:03:20] would require the Audienesa Roma game to end in a draw then it would be a record for the single

[00:03:25] number of draws in a match day. And Jinkers as well, Giancarlo Rinaldi got in touch to say it

[00:03:31] also matched that same seven draw haul from I think it was somewhere in the 1970s. Probably

[00:03:36] would have been helpful if I'd actually had the tweet to hand but there you go. So I

[00:03:40] shout out to Jinkers there as well. I should have checked him before. It's just me and Patrick

[00:03:46] today gang I'm afraid Mina is unable to join us but perhaps not unfortunately the most compelling

[00:03:54] around as we're just saying that she's had to miss this one or four. I had an ex for a long time

[00:04:00] who is very into the TV show ER and ER I don't know if you've watched it. I'm not really big one

[00:04:05] for medical drama stuff not really my thing but they it goes on forever there's millions of

[00:04:11] episodes and I was introduced to this concept that there were moving on episodes so there were

[00:04:17] certain episodes which nothing really happens but that's necessary because in a long running series

[00:04:21] you need some episodes it is your moving on episodes. I think this was definitely one of

[00:04:25] Cédias moving on episodes because we had midweek, Europa League round before and after

[00:04:32] which have got some pretty big stakes for Italian teams. We have a Monday night Milan Darby

[00:04:38] coming up next weekend which may well be the moment that Inter get to lift their title against

[00:04:43] their rivals we'll get to that but this very much felt like in the story of the season this was one

[00:04:48] of those weekends everyone was just everyone was just moving on in this episode and getting to the

[00:04:53] good bit so not the most exciting one I know that's probably not a very draw you in way to

[00:05:00] talk about podcast guys but draw being the operative word. Exactly gotta be honest sometimes

[00:05:06] and not every round can be a banger. I think the place to start Patrick probably because this is

[00:05:13] the one piece of news that really did get obviously everyone's attention that scary moment in

[00:05:20] Udinez's game against Roma, Evan and Dica I think it was the 72nd minute of the game

[00:05:27] falls to the ground and clutches his chest and ends up leaving the pitch on a stretcher

[00:05:35] and the game is subsequently abandoned. We've seen some horrific incidents on the football pitch of

[00:05:44] player suffering cardiac arrest so I think the one that has forever marked Italian football was the

[00:05:49] death of Piedramario Morossini and that was 12 years I believe to the day before this incident

[00:05:58] within Dica and for certain has left a lasting impact but of course internationally I suppose

[00:06:05] more recently you get the example of Christian Eriksen who fortunately his life was saved but

[00:06:09] had a similar situation cardiac arrest on the pitch while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 so

[00:06:14] awareness of these things is so much higher as it turned out and Dica did not suffer

[00:06:21] a cardiac arrest or even it appears cardiac issue. He was released from hospital yesterday

[00:06:27] and effectively it sounds like he suffered and I don't know if my technology is exactly perfect

[00:06:34] here but a mild collapsed lung, mild does not sound like a word that you would want to use with

[00:06:39] collapsed lung but effectively that's been a small amount of air gets between your lung and the

[00:06:45] chest cavity wall and in Italian the word they use was mini-mot and that is mild is perhaps

[00:06:51] not a perfect translation but it's the best I can do for conveying that in general and we still

[00:06:57] don't know all of the very specifics of the situation but in general what when a doctor talks

[00:07:01] about that situation with the collapsed lung what they mean is it's a situation that will resolve

[00:07:05] itself doesn't require serious medical intervention will require monitoring and and for and Dica to

[00:07:10] be tracked and looked after but certainly a lot less serious than we first feared when it happened.

[00:07:16] Absolutely and I think Italy have always had very rigid protocols when it comes to all of these

[00:07:21] cardiac examinations that you can undergo I think we saw it with Eriksen didn't we

[00:07:26] into essentially forced to sell the player on because or rip up his contract because I

[00:07:33] believe and still the case players can't be fitted with a pacemaker and then play professional

[00:07:38] football in Italy so in that sense there would have been a number of checks gone on beforehand

[00:07:44] this is not some heart irregularity from from all accounts as you said it's just something

[00:07:49] that can happen and unfortunately has happened but it was very concerning at the time but

[00:07:54] I think what emerged from this apart from obviously the very positive outcome in terms of

[00:07:58] the player's health which is of course the priority but it was great to see the collaboration between

[00:08:03] Gabriele Cioffi of Udinesi their head coach Daniela de Rossi of Roma the Roma players immediately

[00:08:07] signalling to get medical attention there was also the friuli crowd which was silenced by

[00:08:12] the medic who was then trying to check a pulse for ND card so he could actually hear the

[00:08:17] heartbeats and things so I think everyone clubbed together here and there's a real

[00:08:21] marked contrast between what we saw earlier on in Udine this season with obviously those vile

[00:08:27] scenes of races and towards Mike Mignon this time around very positive story coming out of

[00:08:31] Udine in the end even though at the time it was hugely concerning because the player drops to the

[00:08:36] ground he's holding his chest and naturally people did fear the worst and we have had countless

[00:08:41] examples unfortunately down the years of players succumbing to instances like this you know

[00:08:49] I think about Mark Vivian-Foeh many years ago there was Miklos Fayer of Mainfika but there are

[00:08:55] also other instances Fabrice Moambore albeit I don't think he ever played again after that did

[00:09:00] he I mean he I think his heart did stop on the pitch so I don't want to muddle up sort of

[00:09:09] medical issues because that's not my forte clearly but I think there's a difference isn't

[00:09:12] there between cardiac arrest when your heart stops and what actually happened there with

[00:09:17] Indy Kami initial reports coming out and I didn't like this was speculation that he'd suffered a

[00:09:23] heart attack and those reports were later scotched as and when the player was rushed to hospital

[00:09:30] and they did tests so I think it's also a timely reminder that we shouldn't be dashing to try and

[00:09:36] break the story unless we're absolutely sure of what it is that was a lot of speculation

[00:09:40] about what might have happened. Hey it's Kaylee Cuoco for Price Line ready to go to

[00:11:09] 18 plus terms and conditions apply.

[00:11:11] See website for details.

[00:11:12] But mercifully the player is okay from all accounts.

[00:11:17] We'll see what happens in coming weeks.

[00:11:19] I'd be surprised if he plays again this season but then again I don't know

[00:11:22] what the extent of the repercussions of this.

[00:11:26] But the wisest course of action was taken.

[00:11:29] Admittedly it's easier to do so when Udine's there are outside of the relegation zone

[00:11:34] and that bit clear and it's only round 32

[00:11:37] and Roma are in a fairly strong position

[00:11:39] and it was one all in the game.

[00:11:41] I think had it been a walk over to one team or had they

[00:11:44] and also they just decided well this is the match situation

[00:11:47] we're going to come back another day and complete the match as well

[00:11:49] which I think is good sense as well

[00:11:51] albeit someone did raise the point to me

[00:11:53] a colleague raised the point of the environmental impact

[00:11:56] of Roma possibly flying to Friuli to contest 20 odd minutes of football

[00:12:00] but I think in the grand scheme of things that's a minor issue to contend with.

[00:12:05] The positive to come out of this is A,

[00:12:08] that the player seems to be on the mend

[00:12:10] and B, that everyone then came together club together

[00:12:14] and made sure that the best course of action was pursued.

[00:12:19] I think this is one of the things isn't it with them

[00:12:22] being working in football journalism and Patrick

[00:12:26] we end up having to be, we think that we need to be experts on the football

[00:12:30] and we try to be but you end up sometimes having to be experts on finances

[00:12:33] on medical stuff and some of those things like you just said

[00:12:36] are not necessarily areas of greater strength.

[00:12:39] I know for instance there was a big conversation after what happened with Ericsson

[00:12:44] and the Guardian offices clarifying from the editors point of view

[00:12:47] that clarifying for some of us journalists the differences between cardiac arrests

[00:12:50] and heart attacks because those aren't the same thing.

[00:12:52] Cardiac arrest is in simpler terms an electrical issue

[00:12:56] whereas a heart attack that's about typically the arteries being restricted

[00:13:00] and blood or oxygen being unable to attack the heart.

[00:13:06] It is complicated stuff and as we say in this case

[00:13:10] it ended up being nothing to do with his heart at all

[00:13:13] it's to do with a lung issue.

[00:13:16] I agree completely about the way things were handled

[00:13:20] was the big encouraging thing.

[00:13:22] To re-enact to Morocini maybe it would have made no difference

[00:13:26] but I think one of the most sort of upsetting elements of that whole story

[00:13:31] was how completely shambolic the situation was

[00:13:37] because there was an ambulance trying to access the pitch

[00:13:39] and there was a police car that had been parked

[00:13:41] so that the ambulance couldn't access the pitch

[00:13:43] and no one could find the person with the keys

[00:13:45] and the car out the way there, people breaking into it and pushing it

[00:13:47] while someone's life is on the line

[00:13:50] and I think that seeing how everyone in Audineere

[00:13:53] was as you said immediately respectful

[00:13:55] and how both parties basically...

[00:13:57] In the end the decision was basically left to Romas players.

[00:14:01] Deroci went down to the changing room to check on Indica

[00:14:05] he came back out, spoke to Choffee, spoke to the referee

[00:14:07] they said look we're willing to do what your players want to

[00:14:10] Deroci went and spoke to the players

[00:14:12] they weren't feeling comfortable

[00:14:14] and by this point it had been a 10 minute interruption in the game as well

[00:14:17] and I think you could see people were unsettled

[00:14:19] and so the decision was made

[00:14:21] and I think it's great when a situation gets handled

[00:14:24] by adults in an adult way

[00:14:26] It is complicated now for how this game gets finished

[00:14:29] you've alluded to it with the travel and everything

[00:14:32] because the way this works in Serie A

[00:14:34] the way the rules are written

[00:14:35] they will just come back and complete the remaining minutes of the game

[00:14:38] so as you said 20 minutes plus injury time

[00:14:40] which is a lot of organisation

[00:14:42] getting back and forth for something like that

[00:14:44] for anyone who wanted to know exactly how that's going to work

[00:14:48] any player who was eligible to play

[00:14:51] in the match on that day will be eligible for selection

[00:14:53] they do not need to feel the same 11 players who were on the pitch

[00:14:57] which makes sense because of course

[00:14:59] if they play in a couple of weeks time there may be injuries

[00:15:01] you might not have the same players available

[00:15:03] the only restrictions are you can't use anyone

[00:15:06] who was already subbed off

[00:15:08] or who would have been suspended for the game now

[00:15:10] I think there were

[00:15:12] all who had already been sent off in the game

[00:15:14] no one's been sent off in the game

[00:15:16] so those are the restrictions on the teams that will be selected

[00:15:18] and we will wait to see when the day is

[00:15:21] the rules also state preferably that in this situation

[00:15:24] the game should be finished the next day

[00:15:26] but of course

[00:15:28] Roma had a Europa League game to prepare for

[00:15:30] and the rules do provide that

[00:15:32] they say if there's a mid-week round then different allowances are made

[00:15:34] so that is why that game was not finished

[00:15:37] it was definitely

[00:15:39] poised at one all

[00:15:41] Audieners had started much the brighter

[00:15:43] all my definitely looked like a team who were in the middle of

[00:15:46] a more important tie and had made seven changes

[00:15:49] I think it was from the game against Milan

[00:15:52] Likaku had put them back level

[00:15:54] and probably at the point when this game stopped

[00:15:57] looked more likely to score

[00:15:59] but very much as I said in the balance

[00:16:01] which is the theme of this week

[00:16:03] and all of this week's games

[00:16:05] what are the benefits you want to say about

[00:16:07] Audieners and Roma

[00:16:09] I think we've just seen what a good side Audienes can be

[00:16:12] against the big teams

[00:16:14] I remember when I was doing their game against Inter

[00:16:16] in the previous round

[00:16:18] a lot of their victories have come against bigger opposition

[00:16:21] when you consider they beat Lazio

[00:16:23] they beat Juventus away

[00:16:25] they beat Milan away as well

[00:16:27] so it seems to be they raised the game

[00:16:29] for when they played the bigger clubs and Roma certainly in that bracket

[00:16:31] it's just been too many draws for them

[00:16:33] so it seems appropriate that we segue into draw round

[00:16:37] by talking about Audienesia

[00:16:39] who are the masters of the draw themselves

[00:16:41] I'm trying to decide which draw we go to next

[00:16:44] perhaps because we all love to think about

[00:16:48] Claudio Ranieri and his endless comebacks

[00:16:51] because it's a champion to like perhaps the obvious faces

[00:16:54] to go to Inter against Cali on Sunday night

[00:16:57] by this point we already knew that Sasola had drawn against Milan

[00:17:00] that's probably the most entertaining draw of the weekend

[00:17:02] so we will get to that as well

[00:17:04] not the Depe de la Mole, Niki

[00:17:06] was that not the most entertaining draw?

[00:17:08] not so much

[00:17:10] that was 90 minutes of football that happened wasn't it?

[00:17:13] Inter Cali was an odd game

[00:17:20] Inter definitely not their best

[00:17:22] they did know, sorry, with Milan having drawn

[00:17:25] they knew that a win would mean even a draw

[00:17:28] in next week's derby against Milan would have sealed them the title

[00:17:31] this draw means they can still win the title

[00:17:34] by beating Milan next weekend

[00:17:36] but definitely the win would have positioned them

[00:17:38] even more strongly to have that moment

[00:17:41] it was, to me felt like a game

[00:17:45] being conducted between one team who perhaps

[00:17:49] are feeling now that that title is in their hands

[00:17:52] and we're a little bit too relaxed

[00:17:54] and a Cali-Airi team who we see just keeps fighting

[00:17:57] and keeps finding these goals when they need to

[00:17:59] yeah, uncanny parallels as well

[00:18:01] I did the Inter Cali-Airi game

[00:18:03] and I've done the Cali-Airi at Alanta again the previous weekend

[00:18:06] and it was very similar in that Atalanta scored after about a dozen minutes

[00:18:10] Inter did likewise and then you think

[00:18:12] okay we've done the hard bit, we've broken them down

[00:18:14] but Inter never really pressed ahead

[00:18:16] and looked like scoring that second goal

[00:18:18] the equaliser was a slightly quirky one

[00:18:20] because it's just a long ball forward

[00:18:22] it just cannons off Tito Lovub

[00:18:24] I mean he cushions it down on his thigh

[00:18:26] Shomarodov who I've always been a big fan of

[00:18:28] I know it didn't work out for him at Roma

[00:18:30] but I think technically he's an excellent player

[00:18:32] he lashed it home

[00:18:34] what's weird is we're seeing just how many goals

[00:18:36] Inter are conceiving now where they weren't conceiving before

[00:18:38] I think they had that perfect combination

[00:18:41] earlier on in the season of not only having the best attack

[00:18:44] but it wasn't only they would keep clean sheets

[00:18:46] it was the fact that they would provide

[00:18:48] such solid protection for Summer

[00:18:50] that he wasn't even having saves to make

[00:18:52] and now whilst you can't accuse him

[00:18:54] of making mistakes for either of these two goals

[00:18:56] unlike the mistake he made

[00:18:58] with Dumfries in Audi now

[00:19:00] I think we are now seeing that

[00:19:02] if teams get at Inter and they do drop

[00:19:04] that little bit deeper then they can be hurt

[00:19:06] and what was impressive from Cagliere

[00:19:09] was that they not only equalised once they did it twice

[00:19:11] because Fratese came on, looked like

[00:19:13] he'd made the difference again off the bench

[00:19:15] winning the penalty, Yeri Mina with the handball

[00:19:17] Chala Nolu scores, now 16 penalties

[00:19:19] from 16 for Inter and you think okay job done

[00:19:21] Inter just need to draw in the derby

[00:19:23] on we go and yet Claudio Ranieri

[00:19:25] who spoke after the game they said

[00:19:27] how can you leave Nicolas Viola out

[00:19:29] and he said well because I know

[00:19:31] how much damage he can do

[00:19:33] off the bench, he's such a technical player

[00:19:35] he could do a job starting but why should I

[00:19:37] use him

[00:19:39] Hello it is Ryan and we could all use

[00:19:41] an extra bright spot in our day couldn't we

[00:19:43] just to make up for things like sitting

[00:19:45] in traffic doing the dishes

[00:19:47] counting your steps you know all the mundane stuff

[00:19:49] that is why I'm such a big fan of

[00:20:11] From the start against fresh players when I know

[00:20:13] I can bring him on fresh against tired players

[00:20:15] and he's such an intelligent player that he not only

[00:20:17] understands my team selection but he also understands

[00:20:19] what to do when to do it where to be

[00:20:21] and Viola scored once having scored

[00:20:23] the winner against Atalanta with his head

[00:20:25] he scored

[00:20:27] a wonderful finish after it

[00:20:29] canoned off the forearm

[00:20:31] should we say Lapidula I know that caused some

[00:20:33] contention as well as to whether that should have been hand

[00:20:35] ball and then Viola really should have scored

[00:20:37] a header to win the game for Cagliere

[00:20:39] and I think Claudio Ranieri has shown again

[00:20:41] that he knows what his squad is capable

[00:20:43] of he's well aware of their limitations

[00:20:45] but they just have this

[00:20:47] happy knack of going and going and going until the final whistle

[00:20:49] and they've got Juventus next

[00:20:51] but I know this isn't a preview for the next round

[00:20:53] but if I were a betting man

[00:20:55] which I'm not I would put a lot of money

[00:20:57] on Cagliere beating Juventus in Sardinia

[00:20:59] coming up on Friday evening

[00:21:01] Yeah, when Ranieri's having these

[00:21:03] late game moments he just brings me back to

[00:21:05] for me it was conversations

[00:21:07] that I got to have when he was at Leicester

[00:21:09] actually because I was then sort of being asked

[00:21:11] to speak to players

[00:21:13] who'd worked under him when he was in Italy

[00:21:15] and there was the whole conversation back then

[00:21:17] everyone was very excited about the dilly-ding-dilly dong

[00:21:19] and

[00:21:21] yeah and I was

[00:21:23] speaking to Ivo Poglio who played under him

[00:21:25] under him at Cagliere the last time around

[00:21:27] and Poglio was absolutely adamant

[00:21:29] that started at Cagliere

[00:21:31] you need to write that started at Cagliere

[00:21:33] and but it's you know that was always

[00:21:35] the thing wasn't it that the dilly-ding-dilly dong

[00:21:37] was the wake up guys we need you to

[00:21:39] apply yourselves now you're not concentrated enough

[00:21:41] and he seems to keep getting that

[00:21:43] that reaction late in games but

[00:21:45] but Viola is

[00:21:47] it's a fascinating story because he's really

[00:21:49] not someone who's

[00:21:51] had a great

[00:21:53] he's a journeyman isn't he? Exactly like top

[00:21:55] level career he's played significant

[00:21:57] parts of his career and said he had B

[00:21:59] he was at Benevento when they came up

[00:22:01] went back down came up again so he's not

[00:22:03] someone who you think of as being this

[00:22:05] superstar but he has come to the rescue time

[00:22:07] again as you say I think he's now their top scorer

[00:22:09] on five goals by the way

[00:22:11] so it really has

[00:22:13] been a collaborative collective

[00:22:15] effort from from from Cagliere

[00:22:17] and if you

[00:22:19] are asking me to bet right now I think I would

[00:22:21] I would bet on them staying up because I just think

[00:22:23] they have that ability

[00:22:25] to go to the end of games which which can

[00:22:27] make the difference as for

[00:22:29] Inter

[00:22:31] La Tera was suspended for this game perhaps very conveniently

[00:22:33] for him to make sure he wasn't suspended for

[00:22:35] the Darby next. And Pavar as well.

[00:22:37] Pavar as well as you say

[00:22:39] so we had Alex Sanchez starting up

[00:22:41] front who actually had a good game

[00:22:43] but it definitely

[00:22:45] again

[00:22:47] it's hard for me to say something more

[00:22:49] profound then had the feeling of

[00:22:51] moving on episode from Inter's point

[00:22:53] of view that they're looking ahead to that Darby

[00:22:55] that Darby is the one they've got a circle

[00:22:57] obviously they would have preferred to win this game and get to that game

[00:22:59] in position to

[00:23:01] feel really confident about winning the league against

[00:23:03] Milan but

[00:23:05] there was definitely I think a gap in motivations

[00:23:07] between the two teams in this one.

[00:23:09] Yeah and I quite like the narrative

[00:23:11] aspect of the fact that Inter have to go

[00:23:13] and beat Milan, Milan are the home

[00:23:15] team so the majority of the stadium

[00:23:17] will be will be populated by

[00:23:19] Rosso and Erie fans and

[00:23:21] obviously we've seen the Inter have won the last five

[00:23:23] Darby's then won five in a row and in the calendar year

[00:23:25] 2023 Lester to get across all competition

[00:23:27] so I think there's something

[00:23:29] to that it might have you know had they been able

[00:23:31] to have the famous as the Italians

[00:23:33] would say two results out of three you know afford to draw

[00:23:35] the game then I don't think it would have had the same edge

[00:23:37] it might have been a really sort of cagey game

[00:23:39] but I think now they're going to have to go for it

[00:23:41] Milan will want to beat them as well so

[00:23:43] I quite like the way that that's set up

[00:23:45] to be honest.

[00:24:05] Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to
