This was the week in which Inter clinched the Scudetto and made history by doing so for the first time in a Milan Derby clash, as they defeated their Milanese rivals 2-1. It was a spiteful match with three late red cards as things got heated before the final whistle.
We discuss what's going on with Milan... Where was the fight? Should Pioli go?
And, of course, we wax lyrical about how remarkable Inter has been this season under Simone Inzaghi.

[00:01:35] Ben Aser, Ben's in the corner, cleared by the first man, Nikitarian. Inter a champions.
[00:01:48] Inter win the Derby, Inter win the Scudetto.
[00:01:53] Hello and welcome to another episode of Serie A. We are recording on Tuesday the 23rd of April
[00:01:59] and already, despite there being five matches to spare, we already have our Italian champion for
[00:02:04] the 2023-24 season. There's no surprise as to who the champions are but in dramatic style by
[00:02:13] winning the Derby. The mother of all Derbies, the Derby della Madonna as opposed to the Derby
[00:02:18] della Madonina shall we say, Mina. Did you watch it? Did you enjoy it? Probably not.
[00:02:23] What are your first thoughts on Inter winning the Scudetto by winning the Derby?
[00:02:29] I was going to say no, I didn't watch it. That would have been great. End of podcast.
[00:02:37] Thank you for having me, ciao. I did watch it. I was really especially happy for Simone and
[00:02:47] Zaghi. I feel like we have had a new winner for the last three years, different coaches who
[00:02:53] have won the title for the first time in their careers. But I think, you know, whilst
[00:02:58] Spalletti definitely deserved his, it was nice for Zaghi who had been under so much stress and
[00:03:05] so much pressure last season after 12 losses in Serie A. There was so much written about him,
[00:03:10] whether he deserved to be there, whether he merited his position, how a team like his could
[00:03:15] have lost 12, you know, how they lost the winning mentality that Antonio Conte had given them.
[00:03:20] So for him to guide them this far, to have addressed the weaknesses that his team had
[00:03:25] showed previously, to have continued to improve this team despite the limited budget,
[00:03:30] despite setting players. I'm so happy for him. I'm happy for the style of play. I'm happy for the
[00:03:37] flourishing of players like Lautaro Martinez, especially as well. But mostly for Simone and
[00:03:43] Zaghi for finally showing us that he deserves this position and he is a brilliant coach
[00:03:48] going forward. Great game. I'm very sad on the other hand for Stefano Piori.
[00:03:53] Poor old Stefano Piori, hey, Nikki? Yeah, I echo everything Mina said about in Zaghi. I think we
[00:04:00] definitely need to give him his praise but I mean the first thought for me is just
[00:04:05] not just the mother of all derbies, the mother of the mother of all derbies. There has not been
[00:04:10] the grandmother of all derbies, let's call it. There hasn't been a league title decided in
[00:04:18] Aminand Darby before. It's also the earliest any team has ever won the league with five games as
[00:04:23] fair like you mentioned, Patrick. It was such an occasion in a season that has been heading towards
[00:04:30] an inevitable conclusion but we knew that Inter were going to win this league title. The opportunity
[00:04:34] for Inter to do it in this way was always such a tantalising one for them, nightmarish one
[00:04:41] for Milan. We talked last week about how Inter had made life harder for themselves
[00:04:45] one last week and they would have just needed to not lose this game. So they put themselves in
[00:04:49] the position that they had to win this and the way they did it initially so confidently but then
[00:04:55] building up to that nasty gritty crescendo because Timore scores and you've got Adley is
[00:05:01] showing all of Milan's frustration when he's booting things around on the sidelines
[00:05:04] and Timore celebrating that goal like it's a final and it really does matter that they win it.
[00:05:09] It all became such a brilliant spectacle. I think it was a really memorable end to this
[00:05:16] journey of Inter getting to the title. It was and in the lead up to the game Stefano Piolli who's
[00:05:22] a former Lazio coach, Aziz Simon Insagi incidentally was asked about the dynamic of the Milan
[00:05:29] Darby which has traditionally been quite friendly. You often see those shots in the crowd of
[00:05:34] a couple that's Inter fan alongside Milan fan and he said could the Milan fans almost learn
[00:05:40] something from the the Rome Darby ahead of this game you know and try and tap into a bit more
[00:05:45] animosity because there's so much at stake and I felt the way the game degenerated towards the end
[00:05:49] reminded us a lot of a Roma against Lazio with those three red cards. Dabir e Calabria who's
[00:05:54] the Milan captain losing his head, smashing Fratese in the face, Teo Hernandez who's the
[00:06:00] vice captain getting sent off again in a Darby another clash with Dumfries had a bit of everything this
[00:06:05] game. You have two excellent teams that usually have two excellent sets of players that show and
[00:06:12] exhibit a level of maturity and perhaps sometimes what you get with Roma and Lazio is a lot of
[00:06:17] pettiness as they're both trying to to chase glory whereas these two sides of it so often
[00:06:22] in their lives and I thought that yesterday we saw the lack of leadership in Milan that
[00:06:28] also the betrayal by their leaders in all honesty you expected more from players like Calabria
[00:06:33] and Teo Hernandez and I think that the frustration in their performances and their ability to do
[00:06:39] something this season consistently has led to such an immature performance. It was only two
[00:06:45] years ago that we spoke about it went Inter threw it away and they displayed themselves
[00:06:49] to be a good team in these matches when Giroud would strike and sort of laugh at them as
[00:06:54] Inter looked so frustrated and they were so angry all the time and so emotional that every step
[00:07:00] but this time around it was Milan that looked like that. It was Milan that were frustrated,
[00:07:04] it was Milan that was emotional, it was Milan that took too long to respond
[00:07:07] to show some pride and glory and I think that those red cards is not really some feistiness
[00:07:13] in a little display from a team that was actually desperate to win. It was almost just
[00:07:19] frustration from very immature players who should have been the leaders of that's why
[00:07:22] I'm sad for them. I want that immaturity is that wrong like it's the derby like it's it's
[00:07:28] the derby and you're losing it to your league to your greatest rivals in a game that not only is
[00:07:35] is going to be the first time that someone wins the league title in this derby it's also going
[00:07:40] to get them to that second golden star before you get it it's going to get them that 20 league
[00:07:45] title before you get it even though of course that's a whole conversation in itself that
[00:07:49] everyone can get worked up about about titles one sulcambo the fact is that Inter are going to wear
[00:07:54] that star on their badge next season so you can do your big fantastic by the way Banksy mural
[00:08:01] about nothing changes but you know that it does you know that it does and so it should feel like
[00:08:07] it's on the edge and that people are going to lose their temperament because
[00:08:11] because that's football and of course there's a line right of course don't don't do
[00:08:14] completely stupid things I mean Calabria basically slamming his forearm into my daily
[00:08:19] space we're getting to the point there where I'm a bit more judgmental of it because you know you
[00:08:24] don't need to smash someone's face but do I want to see a bit of pettiness and childishness yes
[00:08:29] because I want to believe that it matters as much to you as players as it would to us as fans

[00:10:03] virginia gambling problem call 1 800 gambler terms and conditions apply i think that was an
[00:10:08] important response as well towards the fans because as you said it had been such a flat
[00:10:12] passive display from me land i mean that david a collaborate a shot that produced a wonderful
[00:10:18] save from summer notwithstanding me land have produced very little in the first half you
[00:10:21] know so inter again score early in a derby then they score early again in the second half
[00:10:26] and at 2 nil you think well how am i land going to score twice here given the previous
[00:10:30] five darbys they'd lost by an aggregate score of 12 1 so although they scored late on it was just
[00:10:36] nice to see the reaction as you said you know adley coming off and kicking over that one of those
[00:10:41] bins on the sidelines and then you know tail and enders getting getting worked up that was because
[00:10:46] actually fratte's he was involved in both incidents i don't know if he's a player that just manages
[00:10:50] to get under opponents not in any way condoning what's happened but you know how you have
[00:10:54] that with certain players we've seen it a bit with manchini and paredes at roma and
[00:11:00] robbie savage back in the day in english football you know and it's no accident matter as you got
[00:11:05] the headbutt is it it's no accident the matter at sea was the one who's an ends up headbutting
[00:11:08] like there's certain players who use that to their advantage i like the segue between
[00:11:12] jandoka manchini and mater at sea who as mean had told us this sort of uh
[00:11:17] they're uh sort of kindred spirits aren't they i think you were saying a few weeks
[00:11:20] ago so the manchini idolizes uh mater at sea but yeah it's a because the oliao and his frustration
[00:11:26] to win the ball back pulls back fratte's he and then tail and enders goes charging in and then
[00:11:29] dumfries who already doesn't like tail and enders decides to grab him by that by the throat and
[00:11:34] both players got sent off so now it was interesting because we hadn't seen too much of that in
[00:11:38] the derby um i remember that tail and enders red card a few years ago when he hacked down
[00:11:44] uh dumfries that was when me land were winning adabi it was a sort of the mother of all
[00:11:47] tactical fouls should we say but um from from a me land fans perspective they know that purely
[00:11:54] is probably on his way out almost definitely we think now um had they won the derby to postpone
[00:11:59] and prolong the title race would that have changed the course of history in terms of purely
[00:12:05] probably not it certainly wouldn't have changed the destination of the titles how much does
[00:12:10] does this matter to me land fans clearly it matters a lot to inter supporters to be able
[00:12:13] to crow that they won the title by winning the derby it's proving to be almost impossible now for
[00:12:19] purely to know how to defeat inter anymore he doesn't really have an idea you could uh you can
[00:12:24] sense the decision to not play olivia jiru to try to spring a tactical surprise backfired
[00:12:31] once upon a time when he would play ben a siren at trekkwasti trekkwasti's to roll or change
[00:12:36] tonali's position and have him as as an attacking player they were brilliant that led
[00:12:41] him to glory on this occasion it seems like his uh he's just is out of ideas and he's struggling
[00:12:47] to find a way to surprise the opponent but i do feel sorry for him um but that doesn't mean to say
[00:12:54] that he hasn't made mistakes we have to question the reasons why he doesn't choose play players who
[00:12:58] are performing um at the right level who are showing the right form why aren't you choosing
[00:13:03] them why is chicoisea not starting certain matches when he's been brilliant so far in recent
[00:13:07] seasons why would you not have an attacking presence in jiru against a very very brilliant
[00:13:12] defense when you know rafael leo was always going to veer left um and he and he's already said that
[00:13:18] he doesn't like playing in that position is a false number nine there are questions that we
[00:13:21] have to ask of purely because i am a big fan of his and i'm somebody who always preaches patients
[00:13:26] i didn't want tanzagi to be thanked i don't want purely to be thanked you lose to roma
[00:13:32] you're so heavily criticized for those two performances against roma in european competition
[00:13:37] this is a time to stop the embarrassment to six starbies in a row it just it seemed almost impossible
[00:13:43] to me i didn't even believe that melanne would allow it i thought that we would see a proud display
[00:13:50] by them a proud performance that fought like they that they would be angry i mean you guys talk
[00:13:55] about like yeah you love the pettiness i wanted to see okay if there is pettiness then let's
[00:13:59] see it from the beginning not at the end like let's see it from the start let's see the anger
[00:14:03] let's see you biting at ankles let's you trying to fight like making sure that you defended
[00:14:07] not leaving a chair to be to roam free in school it was just crazy the amount of mistakes that
[00:14:13] were being made it was just a team that had completely shut down and thought yeah like you
[00:14:17] know what are we going to do and and this is what upsets me and this is where we have to
[00:14:21] ask questions of purely like how can these players be so unmotivated at this point
[00:14:27] when their reputations are on the line when your reputations on the line what is going on
[00:14:32] and he may go my question is is that i'm fine with him going if you can show me a replacement
[00:14:37] that's worthy i don't know if he's the right like the right coach to stay i can understand
[00:14:42] the reasons against and for it i do think like i said i do think he has his alibis i don't think
[00:14:46] he's been given enough time and we've seen women's agate when he has been given full support
[00:14:50] and time he's managed to build something really fantastic and purely has shown that he
[00:14:54] can win it before don't know why people don't think he can win it again but i also think that
[00:15:00] a lot has been made of some of these players that i don't think are Milan worthy i think they're very
[00:15:04] good players but it's between Milan players which is consistent players players that can
[00:15:09] provide the clutch moments and provide consistency which they don't have they have players with a
[00:15:13] lot of promise not sure it's a lot of consistency niki is there not an argument to say that
[00:15:21] the reason it appears so bleak for me land is because they are comparing themselves to their
[00:15:26] city rivals and occasionally you just have to concede that this inter-side are perhaps one in a
[00:15:31] generation certainly in terms of the possibility of getting 100 plus points in the way they've
[00:15:35] dominated this league and also this this footballing legacy as well that just how good the
[00:15:40] football has been it's not black and white is it it's not a case of intra winning therefore
[00:15:45] everything me land of doing is is terrible at bed 365 we don't do ordinary we believe that every
[00:15:53] sport should be epic every home run every hit every inning every play from the moments that are
[00:15:58] legendary to the ones that fly under the radar see for yourself when you sign up today and get
[00:16:03] 150 dollars in bonus bets when you bet just five dollars whatever the sport whatever the moment
[00:16:09] it's never ordinary at bed 365 21 plus only must be physically located in Virginia gambling problem
[00:16:16] call 1 800 gambler terms and conditions apply yeah but I think that is that is very much the crux
[00:16:22] of what's happening though because if you look at it in in absolute terms me land were what
[00:16:27] fourth last season I'm just reminding myself for their points they were on 70 points last
[00:16:30] season this season with five games to go they've got 69 so that if in the next five games
[00:16:35] they make two points they've done better than last season they have actually been on a really
[00:16:42] impressive run pretty much since the midseason wobble domestically they've been very consistent
[00:16:47] the only reason it doesn't look amazing is because inter have been even better
[00:16:51] and it brings me back to I put this in my column this morning and brings me back to
[00:16:56] erika sake after their Champions League semi-final last season saying it's a fiat
[00:16:59] shink which enter chasing a Ferrari that was his his way of drawing that comparison and
[00:17:04] and yes sometimes it's it's not fair I think that unfortunately that comparison is part of the story
[00:17:12] whether you like it or not and I think that the fact that this is now six derby's in a row is part
[00:17:16] of why is part of why he will go is because me land supporters just can't accept being
[00:17:24] genuinely at a record level of out done by their by their local rivals inter have never won
[00:17:30] six derby's in a row before I think me land have done it a couple of times before but inter had never
[00:17:34] done it so it's it's that sort of thing that does end up resonating with fans getting under their skin
[00:17:42] beginning to feel like something that's that's oppressive and inescapable and I think that
[00:17:49] perhaps as well unfortunately for purely the other part of it is you had a chance to make
[00:17:55] a second narrative by beating drama and going on a winning Europa League and you didn't take
[00:17:59] that as your alternative so you had a chance to give them a different story and you couldn't do it
[00:18:04] I think it's tough I think it's definitely more shades of grey than than I think some people want
[00:18:10] it to be I think there's a lot of people who just want him gone and telephone he's the worst
[00:18:13] thing ever and I think I would remind those people to be careful what they wish for and that
[00:18:18] they also chased a certain maxillegria out of town right before he went on to win an awful
[00:18:23] lot of league titles elsewhere but I think that perhaps at this point it feels inescapable
[00:18:28] that purely is going to leave and perhaps that will be better just for both parties I think I should
[00:18:33] have framed my question better but what I was basically trying to say is I feel like we're looking
[00:18:38] at this too much from the Milan angle when actually the story here is just how brilliant
[00:18:41] inter have been the one the lead title with five games to spare I'm just conscious that I feel
[00:18:45] like we spent the first 10 minutes of the podcast talking about Milan who are who are just on
[00:18:50] the receiving end really here they're the whipping boys six straight derby losses as you
[00:18:54] said I think we should be waxing lyrical about about inter which is what we're about to do
[00:18:59] right now Mina over to you our resident Juventina talk to us in glowing terms about just how fabulous
[00:19:06] Inter are please this is what happens when you bring in a director from Juventus and a former
[00:19:11] coach they start a winning cycle very good very good you introduced me as a Juventina
[00:19:19] so it is bepe marrota one quadrado has been a great signing as well don't buy our players by
[00:19:26] our managers this is bepe marrota's 10th title which goes to tell you exactly like what this
[00:19:32] this director can do I mean he has really gotten rid of the toxicity that existed within that
[00:19:39] dressing room when he arrived born in the right coaches it's just been a conscious effort
[00:19:44] better to create that family unit that they needed in the dressing room out was players like ikad and
[00:19:49] nangolan and and in came players who really believed in the squad and he just said this
[00:19:54] wonderful thing yesterday in the quotes that it's about investing in the man rather than
[00:19:58] investing in the player and that was one of like his main principles that Juventus at the time
[00:20:03] when he was scouting players he never scouted the best team in the league or or the number
[00:20:08] one player in that role he would actually interview them and have a chat with them and talk about
[00:20:12] them what they like to do in there that was so part like it formed such a big part of why he would
[00:20:17] decide to go with the player or not per attitude was the guy who knew how to scout the players but
[00:20:22] it was him who made the final decision as to whether or not they would be an important member
[00:20:26] of the team and creating a team has always been the most important thing to him so second title
[00:20:32] one with inter eight with Juventus marrota is an incredible ceo and the fact of the matter
[00:20:38] is that he chose in zaghi he decided to stay faithful to in zaghi and showed
[00:20:43] patience and trying to provide him with as much as possible but even in allowing him to make mistakes
[00:20:48] i mean in zaghi was a coach who was taking off players who wore a yellow card and not always
[00:20:53] making the right substitutions and he continues to make mistakes because coaches do that and
[00:20:57] cellotti still does that with Milan you know that you're never going to find a coach who
[00:21:01] doesn't overthink even pep quadriola does but it's remarkable in three three year journey how
[00:21:07] far in zaghi has managed to take this into side whether it's a european final or now the scudetto
[00:21:13] and so despite reducing costs and that is that is a collaborative effort from management it's a
[00:21:18] collaborative effort with the coach to have all decided okay we might be losing these great players
[00:21:23] we might be losing on ana but we'll bring in a goalkeeper who's managed to keep more clean
[00:21:28] sheets than any goalkeeper in the top five leagues we'll bring in pavad who will help
[00:21:33] initiate the attacks from the back so we're not just dependent on bastoni we'll bring in
[00:21:38] we'll change the position of chaneloglu so he becomes the most important player
[00:21:42] it is these different things that there that has happened but it's a collaboration
[00:21:46] and that's what's that's what happens when you support your coach i don't sometimes people
[00:21:50] think supporting your coach is buying him all the players he wants it's actually just
[00:21:53] listening to what you have to say and you both you all have a say because everyone has
[00:21:56] something important to say and i think that is what inter have done is show us how to be a team
[00:22:02] upstairs and on the pitch there was a super chaotic live with some inter players
[00:22:10] after the the title win and you had chaneloglu and two around both on the call at a certain
[00:22:18] point with seven chang the club president and they were basically ribbing him saying listen
[00:22:24] president you both signed us both for free so you can pay us both some extra money now and
[00:22:29] and making a joke of it which is an entertaining moment and poor jang saying i knew i shouldn't come
[00:22:35] on this call but and of course free is never really free when we talk about free transfers in
[00:22:41] football there's no such thing free means you're paying some extra in the signing on bonus
[00:22:45] you're probably paying higher wages and you would have done if you paid a transfer fee
[00:22:48] free is never truly free but it's still absolutely is true that inter have done some
[00:22:54] exceptional business bringing in chaneloglu certainly in chaneloglu's story we were joking
[00:23:01] about the pettiness and he said his incredibly petty instagram post calling out the meleann's
[00:23:07] funds which was a clearly pre-prepared generated image of him sat in front of people howling
[00:23:13] at him with banners calling him a traitor and a clown because of course he left meleann in
[00:23:18] 2021 came to inter then had to watch meleann with the title without him so he's had this one
[00:23:25] coming for a while but still even if it took him three years to get it has been a fantastic
[00:23:31] signing for inter two ram i think it's wonderful that he scored what in effect was the deciding
[00:23:36] goal last night because he has been such an astonishingly good signing probably the signing
[00:23:42] of the summer of the season really and said yeah in terms of the value to what was expected
[00:23:49] when you talk about me already said that the players who've left inter and train saggy
[00:23:52] when you said goodbye to jeko and lucar culo and also korea we'll say it quieter
[00:23:59] the expectation for this attack was not at this level it wasn't and two ram had like any normal
[00:24:08] player his better moments and his worst moments and i would think perhaps the
[00:24:12] miss chance against atletica will be one of those ones that is a real moment that got away
[00:24:16] this season but he took his goal brilliantly here he's been a brilliant impact on that attack overall
[00:24:22] and i think in general we all feel that he if anything unhelped loutado to untap something
[00:24:29] different and become even better as well absolutely and you may point there about free transfers
[00:24:35] and whilst they're not free you know often you pay a premium in terms of signing on fees or
[00:24:40] actual monthly wages etc as it is in italy but a two ram i think there was eight million euros in
[00:24:46] agents fees which are more than worth it but more than anything it's actually important for inter
[00:24:51] given their current financial plight that they are free transfers these players because we saw
[00:24:55] it with onanna he was a free transfer they're able to make a huge profit on the balance sheet
[00:25:00] and this talk of them may be doing likewise with two ram although i'm sure they'd like to
[00:25:04] resist any sort of overtures towards him because every year inter having to try and at least
[00:25:09] turn a profit or at least break even because of their well documented financial plight
[00:25:16] but i completely agree with marcus to ram and he scored in both darbys he scored in all of the
[00:25:21] big matches this season you know apart from aletica madrid as you as you said but at least domestically
[00:25:25] had done so and um and i think it's amazing because he came in to replace amongst others
[00:25:31] jeko andukaku andukaku scored five times in as many darbys not to ram's got two in two
[00:25:36] and so he's even picking up the slack in in in terms of that but i completely agree with
[00:25:42] what you're saying about marotta and and marotta came out and spoke and said that
[00:25:46] insagi deserves the credit he's the architect of this because some of the players he's been given
[00:25:51] when they were signed it wasn't exactly signings that blew you away and soma who's
[00:25:56] quite goalkeepers have greater longevity but he's already turned 35 this season mickey tarian
[00:26:02] who's now 35 and yet they play an insagi's team and they appear world-class but if they
[00:26:09] were world-class there'd be a lot more clamor for them to be signed by other teams at the time it's
[00:26:14] incredible but it's exactly that i mean bepe marotta also bought in dad meanne and i remember
[00:26:19] when he arrived i was like oh you know like it's just not a name that that wows you and look look
[00:26:24] how important he's been look how many appearances he's made look how his tactical flexibility
[00:26:29] is really allowed into to thrive and to have these different options
